I don’t think Dr Axe and I really saw eye to eye. I made the appointment because I have injuries that have kept me from exercising for almost 2 years. Those injuries and inactivity have caused me to gain a lot of weight - of which, I have already lost almost 30 pounds. Unfortunately, all Dr Axe seems to see is a fat guy who “doesn’t take care of himself.” And then the answer to every problem I have is, “Well, you’re fat.” I KNOW that I’m fat. But the fat part is the result of the problems that I wanted to talk about; not the cause. I wasn’t fat before I got hurt, so it can’t be my fatness and the strain it puts on my joints that caused this current cascade of injuries. I also REALLY don’t understand why every time I ask about medications that could help me, I get told that medications are “just band-aids.” So what if they are? Band-aids have a purpose and they are effective. We have entire government agencies dedicated to ensuring that prescription drugs are safe, and Dr. Axe is among the very small class of people trained to give access to these treatments. Why hide that expertise away in favor of handing me off to psychologists and dieticians with NO medical knowledge? I wanted modern medical science to help me address problems that I haven’t been able to solve on my own. Instead, I got, “You’re fat. You should eat less and maybe get some counseling.” Ok, but I didn’t need a doctor for that. What was the point of this meeting? I’m not mad; I think I understand why Dr. Axe did and said a lot of what he did and said. It’s just that the reasons were all based on:1.) misjudgments of me, and 2.) ideas about the practice of medicine that seem - to me - to make medicine itself obsolete. I think we just didn’t communicate very effectively. Maybe my fault. Possibly a bad day for either or both of us. I’ll come for the checkup that I scheduled, but if I leave that appointment feeling this way about the experience, I think this might just not be the right doctor for me.
