I came back to see Nurse Johnson after being treated by her twice. I felt like we really connected and she understood my concerns during the first two visits. However, this visit was very different. I met with Nurse Johnson about an accommodation note for a preexisting medical condition that had been diagnosed by many doctors, including specialists over the last 15 years of my life. Nurse Johnson told me that this documented, physical medical condition was “in my head.” She then told me the only reason she would write me the letter is because not writing one would cause me mental anguish which would cause an episode. Nurse Johnson ordered an EKG, which I did not need after having some in the past. She would have known this if she listened to me or looked at the medical records I provided. Additionally, she did not look at the previous medical documentation I brought to her attention and did not ask about triggers that I experience, though she included some (that are NOT triggers for me) in the letter. She also joked that I “didn’t expect to pass out while sitting in a chair,” which, if she had bothered to listen to my experiences, she would know has happened 3 times, including in my most recent episode. Nurse Johnson wrote a few sentence long letter that did not reflect my condition or what I was seeking accommodations for. When I went back to the clinic to speak with her about it, the receptionist stated that she was with another patient but that she was not going to change the letter. I stated that I would wait until her other appointments were completed, but she refused to see me. I was able to speak with Megan and Sarah, who were helpful. They listened to my concerns and shared that a new letter would be written to reflect them. However, the revised letter again misstated my condition, including triggers that I do NOT have. I have never felt so disrespected by a medical professional, especially one that I thought I had good rapport with. Although Nurse Johnson has more medical training than I do, no one knows my body or experiences more than me. If she had taken the time to listen to me or my medical records, she would know that this is not “in my head.” I felt belittled and invalidated and don’t wish this experience on any student. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. Thank you.
