He addresses any questions or concerns I have and works towards a solution after stability in medication has been reached.

I adore Dr Macken and have been seeing him for almost 20 years. I followed him from Loyola. If anyone I know directly or peripherally asks about a recommendation for a neurologist, I recommend him ( this situation happens frequently because I am a healthcare provider myself). I trust Dr. Macken implicitly. However I do have one concern that needs to be brought to administration’s attention and it is no fault of Dr. Mackens. He is extremely short staffed so messages that I send through my chart go completely unanswered. I am unable to make appointments because no one calls me back. The appointment I had with him today I was only able to make because I physically showed up in his office at the front desk while my husband was in the hospital having a procedure. I request refills for my epilepsy medication and no one answers me. The only time they respond is when the pharmacy calls them directly. This has been problematic because at one point since January I went two days without my medication and I had a seizure. Again I want to be very clear: this is not Dr. Mackens’s fault but he needs more staff in his office to help him. Because of being shortstaffed I did not get my medication and had a seizure. Please do what you can to increase staffing and Dr. Mackens office. He’s an epileptologist and his patients very often need a quick turnaround to their questions. Thank you

MD was sympathetic to pt. goals, demonstrated a thorough understanding of pt. 's desired outcomes, and was not reductive or condescending when pt. relayed personal accounts and opinions regarding medical conditions and events. Most important, MD shared pt. goal of maintaining academic skill and function as well as symptom management.

He actually cared about my issues and gave me some temporary relief until further testing will be done. He actually wants to get to the bottom of the issue instead of just increasing medication like other doctors I’ve seen. Very thankful and happy to have him as my neurologist now and hopefully forever!

It is more than how he knows his field, but that he knows the practical, day-to-day things that make treatment such an art.
