She has great bedside manner. Always makes me feel listened to. I feel like I can trust her to give me the best treatment and advice.

My experience with Kathleen today was not at all what I expected given her considerable experience in the healthcare field. I came into the appointment looking to have a vulnerable and informative conversation with a trained physician who could direct me to the best care. I unfortunately did not receive that from Kathleen. From the moment she entered the room, I did not feel welcomed. Before even introducing herself, she criticized my “late” arrival and the fact I was still working on the check-in sheet. I, in fact, arrived at my appointment location early, but it was marked as later due to problems with the system. Even after sorting this through with Kathleen, she never apologized for being so quick to wrongfully accuse me. This hindered the atmosphere for the remainder of our conversation, as I was in a room with someone who, with an appointment encroaching after, was not 100% present to hold the sensitive conversation I came in hoping to have. My experience with Kathleen was not entirely a letdown, as she offered some degree of answers to my questions. In all, Kathleen did not build an atmosphere of physician-patient trust that as many would agree, is essential to quality care. As a individual very visibly within a minority racial group, physician mistrust is already an issue disproportionate to members of my community. My hope was that I would be able to find a patient and caring physician to discuss vulnerable topics with here at Northwestern.

Kathleen was by far the most inconsiderate, rude, and unprofessional health care provider I have encountered. She made it very clear from the moment she started talking to me that she did not care for my concern and that I was wasting her time. I was immediately taken back as I had good experiences with NM Health Services in the past and had a genuine concern that I wanted a second opinion on. Anyone - especially a health professional for that matter - would realize that wanting a second opinion on something that pertains to your health and wellbeing is valid. However, Kathleen made sure to make me know that my intent to want a second opinion was silly and wasting her time. She made me feel humiliated and doubtful for wanting a second opinion, and even more so, that she did not respect my time and effort to be at the appointment. It was obvious that she did not respect me as a patient and - what's more - as a person. Throughout the appointment, it was evident that Kathleen completely lacks the empathy, sympathy, and basic human decency to be a health care provider that patients would feel secure trusting in. She made me feel unsafe in an environment where I am meant to be safe.
