As a fellow mental health professional and Associate Professor of Existential/Humanistic Psychology, adjunct faculty at a leading university in Chicago, I recognize in Dr. Dawn Epstein, the critical qualities that the mental health profession urges the fields of medicine and medical psychology to embrace. It is crucial for health care practitioners to implement a holistic approach which focuses on the totality of an individual, including mind, spirit, emotions, context, and worldview, as these dimensions are inextricable from a person's biological and physical being and play a primary role in their treatment response and progress. The strong correlation between personal meaning and survival has been established by the research and work of eminent existential psychiatrists such as Dr. [full name] and Dr. [full name], and by internationally renowned humanistic psychologists such as Dr. [full name]. "Meaning" also includes that individuals receiving medical, medical psychology, and mental health services are treated with respect and dignity, with authentic understanding of their context and of how context interplays with emotional and physical health, with genuine compassion, empathy, warmth, and humanism, and from a strengths-based versus critical perspective. As practitioners, we must suspend our personal biases, judgment, and pre-conceived notions, and become “students” of our clients, so that we can understand and address their authentic essence as beings-in-the-world from the client’s own perspective, values, and worldview. As a gifted and brilliant psychologist, Dr. Epstein encompasses both a superb command of her field and that rare quality of authentic humanism, which addresses all the afore-referenced qualities. She exceeds my expectations in each of these dimensions, competencies, and capacities. She has an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the interplay between life conditions, context, and toxic stress, and the emergence of functional GI conditions, and how awareness of these issues can empower an individual to improve their quality of life. She is, furthermore, very generous with her time, and she provides in-depth and comprehensive answers to questions which are entertained during conferences. She has reviewed and encouraged implementation of CBT strategies to deal with my caregiver and work-related stressors and to refocus on healthy choices when faced with stress and this has had an excellent impact on my quality of life. Dr. Epstein is extremely collaborative and an unfaltering care-partner in supporting me in the process of losing 25 pounds through diet and exercise. She is a gift to all who work with her! Brava!
