I came to HSS because I was a medical mystery. My left had begun to swell and I ended up in the emergency room of a NJ hospital. 4 days with no diagnosis. I went to (2) Rheumatologist, (2) hand surgeons, I also had xrays, (2) mri's, many blood tests. A rheumatologist in NJ diagnosed me with RA because I tested slightly positive for Anti-CCP once, testing afterwards were all negitive yet he started me on drug treatment for RA. I felt I needed to go to a leading hospital for Rheumatology and that's how I found Dr Goodman. She said my case was very unusual but that I came to the right place because at HSS we specialize in the unusual. From that moment in April of 2024 I knew I was in good hands. Dr Goodman collaborated with Dr [last name] and Dr [last name] to find the reason for my left swollen hand. I had a biopsy done by Dr [last name] in May of 2024 but was inconclusive. I lived with my condition until February of 2025 where I again ended up in ER of a NJ hospital with no answers again. I went back to Dr Goodman and she was so determined to find the answer but was adamant that it was not RA. She sent me back to Dr [last name] where he ordered aspirated fluid from my swollen hand on 3/7/25. Sure enough on 4/2/25 Dr [last name] called me to tell me that one of my cultures tested positive for the infection Mycobacterium Marium. I just finished 7 months of drug treatment and I am cured!!!! I was a medical mystery for 16 months until the team at HSS solved it!! I really can not put into words the appreciation for the team at HSS that worked to cure me. That's the difference...The Team. I was so impressed by how all the doctor communicated throughout the process...that made the difference. As an example, on my final appointment on 12/17/25 Dr [last name] walked 2 blocks over to Dr [last name]'s office so we could have a final group meeting all together to review the results....where else does this happen? That god for Dr Goodman for not giving up on believing it was an infection and not RA and guiding the team to find the answers. I love all of them,,,I really mean it,,,I have my life back!!
