I came to HSS after my ortho stopped doing knee surgeries and I did not care for docs he referred me to - who were very brash, cocky and mechanical. Dr Ast speaks straight, but he also explains things so my husband and I could understand how to prep, what to expect during/after surgery, etc. I made the absolute right choice in selecting Dr Ast, and couldn't be more thankful for the outcome of both surgeries (2 knees, 5 mos apart) and grateful to Dr Ast and his HSS staff.

I couldn't have chosen a better surgeon. He gave me my life back-well at least half of it. Im scheduled for surgery in another four weeks, four months after the first hip replacement surgery. I'm looking forward to it. That should be an indication of how confident I feel with Doctor Ast as my surgeon. I highly recommend him.

I cannot say enough good things about my entire care team - so much so, I'm going ahead now with second knee surgery. From the receptionists to the nurses and docs, to PT, xray techs, and all the supporting medical personnel who answer portal questions I sent to Dr Ast's office in a very timely manner, I have found everyone to be exceptionally professional and helpful.

Dr AST has the best patient Dr communication skills i have none had in any other Dr. He takes the time and talks in terms i can understand.

Dr. AST was absolutely wonderful! He was compassionate, explained everything thoroughly, and showed incredible patience. His bedside manner is outstanding—one of the best doctors I’ve ever seen. It was a truly positive and wonderful experience. Highly recommended!

Dr. Ast has a wonderful bedside manner. He listened carefully to my concerns, conducted a thorough examination and shared his evaluation with me. He concluded that I do not need knee surgery but rather the issue is coming from my lower back. His examination included simple tests that support his opinion (tests another doctor at a different hospital did not do and his treatment options would not address the issue in my back). I left Dr. Ast’s office impressed with the facility, the staff and Dr. Ast!

Dr. Ast truly made me feel like I had chosen the right surgeon. He smiled, made eye contact, asked repeatedly if I had any further questions, and actually made me laugh with his smiley face signature on my knee...much needed and appreciated! :-)

I cannot express how happy I am with the experience. Dr. AST was totally upfront about the procedure and that it was going to be a hard one to recover from. Knowing this it did help me push through and work harder to get past the discomfort. Which I feel was an important part of this journey.

I met with Dr. Michael Ast two years ago. I talked about my fears with the procedure and difficult recovery. He was straight forward countered all fears and concerns with facts. He told me that post op will be some of the most painful days in my life but with pain management and PT, it would improve. I appreciated his candor and honesty.

I thought Dr Ast was outstanding, he took time before and after the surgery to meet with me and answered all of my questions and also spoke directly to my wife right after I came out of the OR.
