I am trying hard to have my teenaged daughter advocate for herself and speak to providers about her concerns. The provider directed questions to me, looked to me, and expected me to answer it all - even after my daughter was the one answering the questions and explaining her concerns doe the visit. It would be appreciated to acknowledge that a 15 year old can know and understand her needs as well as or even better than a parent can. And when that young patient speaks up, to work with them, look at them, direct comments and questions to them. It’s is their appointment and health in question to begin with.

When my infant daughter was very young, I asked Dr. Martinez if there was anything I should do to protect my infant from cold sores as I know they can be dangerous for infants. She looked at me like she was absolutely disgusted by me. Recently I brought my teenage daughter in, and after her appointment she confided in me that when asked if sexually active, she felt like the Dr. Martinez did not believe her and she felt uncomfortable. This is very disappointing to me because I think it is important for women to feel comfortable being open and honest with their doctors.
