She is wonderful, I need cataract surgery and she gave me her honest option on what I need. I had RK and astigmatism which limits me to a much more expensive Surgery. She was honest about the standard gave me options explained the situation and told me that I didn’t need to have it done this year and we will revisit it next year. I also have a very light case of glaucoma. Pressures are really low.

After about 6 months of reading posts in this forum, I thought I would relate my experience with my DMEK surgery. I’m 77 and live in central Arizona and had a stage 4 Fuch’s Diagnosis. My vision was blurry in my left eye and uncorrectable with lenses. My Optometrist and local Ophthalmologist both recommenced Dr. Ijeoma Asota in Phoenix for the surgery. I was a bit skeptical since she was not on this organizations list of recommenced physicians! But after meeting her for a consultation, decided to entrust my left eye to her care. I postponed my surgery from August to November. I didn’t want to spend time in PHX in August. The date came, I rented and AIRBNB for 8 days near the surgery center in Sun City. The protocol for recovery was a 2nd day, 7th day and 30th appointments, and resting supine all night and every other hour for 4 days post surgery plus Antibiotic and Steroid eye drops. One note about this 8 day rental; The difference elevation between PHX and my home in central AZ was to great...the bubble may have dissipated prematurely if I went home to recover! Thus I needed to stay in PHX for the 7 day recovery period. The surgery was professional and with no pain. I was given Propanol while my eye was anesthetized and a half dose during the actual operation. During the operation, all I can remember is a surgical mask being put over my face and head. I think I was in the state between sleep and woke. The surgery was fast, maybe 30 minutes. After about and hour in recovery, laying supine, the doctor checked her work, and while my eye was still numb, gave me a little more of the gas that pushes the transplant in place (with a syringe). Did not feel a thing. I left the surgery center with a big patch over my eye, which came off at the 1st follow up appointment. The most challenging part of the operation was the recovery. I did not think I could comply with remaining supine for most of 4 days, but I tried my best. I did use a thin flat pillow, but I am sure at night, I must have turned to my side (normal sleeping position). I trying using some ‘pillow device’ I bought on Amazon designed to keep you head still and facing the ceiling, and it worked for the daytime every other hour protocol. My spouse (retired nurse) was very good at managing my getting into and out of bed! During the 7 day post-op period, my eye was blood red, but with only a bit of dull pain. I redness resolved completely after about 10 days. A couple of Tylenol’s took care of the pain. I noticed immediately that I was light sensitive, and so bright that I teared constantly. The gas bubble blocked my vision, so I could not see anything out of that eye at first. Over the week the bubble dissipated, and things came back into view. There was some double vision at about the 6 or 7th day, but that also resolved as the bubble fully dispersed. At my 7th day appointment, the doctor said that the transplant had fully attached and everything was normal. There was no need for any re-bubble or other treatment. The eye drop protocol was the only thing to be concerned with. I was totally complaint – 4 Prednisolone and 2 Ofloxocin daily for next week and then just the 4 Prednisolone. The Prednisolone drops taper off over a year until none are needed. The light sensitivity and tearing were the main features in recovery during the next 3 weeks. But in week 4, both seemed to be returning to normal. By my 30th day visit to Dr Asota, my vision in my eye had cleared. It had been 20/80 before the operation, and now was 20/30. The Dr said to wait another month before getting a new refraction and new glasses. I booked my appointment with my local OD for an appointment in 30 days. I am writing this during that 30 day waiting period, and am very satisfied and convinced that the operation will be completely successful and my vision will return to clear and normal. I am happy to recommend Dr Asota for DMEK surgery. She did an excellent job in my case – my local Docs were right about here abilities. Plus she was very pleasant and easy to work with. Her team was highly competent in both pre and post surgery procedures. My other eye in only a stage 2 Fuch’s situation, but I would no hesitate to seek out Dr Asota again if needed.
