I was seeing Dr. Malhotra for a second opinion, as I doubt I was getting properly diagnosed and treated after continuing to suffer from debilitating pain for months. I also suffered mentally, a sense of near despair—in late March I was summiting a Sierra Nevada glacier peak in snow shoes then two months late “crippled” in my young daughter’s words--then in and out of doctors’ offices since May with worsening symptoms and a puzzled look on the face of my Rusk Rehab Center’s doctor. My friend recommended that I see Dr. Malhotra, who treated her successfully several years ago. I was able to see him less than a week after I called his office, which was a wonderful surprise and a big relief (NYU Langone doctors are not available until Oct. or Nov.). He and his staff did their homework before my visit, having requested me to send my MRI reports and bring images. He also read my lengthy email that summarized my case history. He was personable, patient and empathetic. Most importantly, he immediately demonstrated his professional expertise by showing me the relevant MRI images to back up his analysis, diagnosed and treatment plan. He then explained the procedure (incl. how I might feel during the procedure), possible outcomes and potential next steps. I called my husband afterwards and told him that I finally felt hope. We also ran his proposed procedure by a friend of ours who is a leading expert in the same medical field but resides in Texas (residencies in HSS and Rusk); he reviewed my MRI images and proposed the same procedure, except adding that Dr. Malhotra might also consider a sacroiliac joint shot to treat my chronic osteoarthritis there. I was further impressed by the efficiency and courtesy of the staff, who immediately went to work to arrange my procedure and called and emailed me to update me on the status. They were able to clear insurance within probably just an hour of my visit and schedule my procedure within two workdays of my visit (excluding the weekend).
